Humidity is the enemy of every backyard project in New Orleans, and that reality shaped everything about Jon's newest addition to his home. It started simply enough: a call to Hurricane Fence Co about adding a Bon Pergola with a built-in fan to his backyard. But once Martina Scheuermann arrived to walk the space with him, the conversation grew. Jon wanted more than shade; he wanted a deck beneath the pergola, a real outdoor living area. The challenge was keeping that deck safe from the ground-level moisture that plagues so much of the region, and Martina's answer was twofold: build with composite decking instead of traditional wood, and anchor the whole structure on concrete footings sunk into the ground for stability.
From there, the build became a study in moisture defense. Every joist was treated pine, coated in a marine-grade finish to keep rot from ever taking hold, and a barrier of plastic and gravel was laid both beneath the deck and around its outer edges to keep dampness from creeping in. On top of that foundation went an Endeck composite product, a choice that impressed Martina with its craftsmanship, right down to screws so precisely color-matched to the decking that the fasteners all but disappeared into the surface. What began as a simple inquiry about a pergola ended with a fully protected, low-maintenance deck that Jon was, in the end, delighted with.
